Printed question

The ellipse C1C_1 with the equation x262+y232=1\frac{x^2}{6^2}+\frac{y^2}{3^2}=1 is transformed by a stretch with scale factor kk parallel to the xx-axis, followed by a translation of mm units in the positive xx-direction, followed by a translation of nn units in the negative yy-direction, to form C2C_2.

(i) Find the equation of C2C_2 in terms of k,m,nk,m,n. [3]

(ii) Given that C2C_2 is a circle centred at (4,−7)(4,-7), find the values of k,m,nk,m,n. [2]

Printed working

(i) Transformation 1: Stretch with scale factor kk parallel to xx-axis.

Transformation 2: Translate mm units in positive xx-direction.

Transformation 3: Translate nn units in negative yy-direction.

C1:x262+y232=1→Trans 1(x/k)262+y232=1C_1:\frac{x^2}{6^2}+\frac{y^2}{3^2}=1\xrightarrow{\text{Trans 1}}\frac{(x/k)^2}{6^2}+\frac{y^2}{3^2}=1.

→Trans 2(x−m)2(6k)2+y232=1\xrightarrow{\text{Trans 2}}\frac{(x-m)^2}{(6k)^2}+\frac{y^2}{3^2}=1.

→Trans 3(x−m)2(6k)2+(y+n)232=1\xrightarrow{\text{Trans 3}}\frac{(x-m)^2}{(6k)^2}+\frac{(y+n)^2}{3^2}=1.

C2:(x−m)2(6k)2+(y+n)232=1C_2:\frac{(x-m)^2}{(6k)^2}+\frac{(y+n)^2}{3^2}=1.

(ii) If C2C_2 is a circle, then 6k=3⇒k=126k=3\Rightarrow k=\frac12.

C2C_2 is a circle centred at (4,−7)⇒m=4,n=7(4,-7)\Rightarrow m=4,n=7.

Teacher notes

Transformation 1: Replace xx with xk\frac xk.

Transformation 2: Replace xx with x−mx-m.

Transformation 3: Replace yy with y+ny+n.

For circle, coefficients of x2,y2x^2,y^2 are the same.

Printed answer key

(i) C2:(x−m)2(6k)2+(y+n)232=1C_2:\frac{(x-m)^2}{(6k)^2}+\frac{(y+n)^2}{3^2}=1. (ii) k=12,m=4,n=7k=\frac12,m=4,n=7.
