Complete question

Without a graphing calculator solve x≤15/(x+2)x\le15/(x+2). [3] Hence solve 1/x2≥(x2+2)/151/x^2\ge(x^2+2)/15. [2]

Printed working

The instruction says a graphic calculator is not to be used.

x≤15x+2,x≠−2x−15x+2≤0x2+2x−15x+2≤0(x+5)(x−3)x+2≤0(x+2)(x+5)(x−3)≤0,x≠−2.\begin{aligned} x&\le\frac{15}{x+2},\qquad x\ne-2\\ x-\frac{15}{x+2}&\le0\\ \frac{x^2+2x-15}{x+2}&\le0\\ \frac{(x+5)(x-3)}{x+2}&\le0\\ (x+2)(x+5)(x-3)&\le0,\qquad x\ne-2. \end{aligned}

Thus x≤−5x\le-5 or −2<x≤3-2<x\le3.

1x2≥x2+215⟹x2≤15x2+2,\frac1{x^2}\ge\frac{x^2+2}{15}\quad\Longrightarrow\quad x^2\le\frac{15}{x^2+2},

since x2,x2+2>0x^2,x^2+2>0 and x≠0x\ne0.

Using the earlier result with xx replaced by x2x^2 gives x2≤−5x^2\le-5 or −2<x2≤3-2<x^2\le3. The first has no real solutions since x2>0x^2>0; the second becomes 0<x2≤30<x^2\le3.

Therefore −3≤x<0-\sqrt3\le x<0 or 0<x≤30<x\le\sqrt3. Alternatively, −3≤x≤3-\sqrt3\le x\le\sqrt3, x≠0x\ne0.

Teacher margin notes

Can sketch the graph of y=x2y=x^2.

Source diagrams

Printed cubic sign sketch with closed endpoints−5 and3 and an open excluded input−2, highlighting the negative intervals. Printed y=x² graph intersecting y=3 at x=±√3, with the below-line curve portions highlighted; x=0 remains excluded by the original denominator.
