Source qualification: solution PDF p.28 assumes ab≠1 in part (ii). Under that part’s literal wording, a constant-map family also works. Part (iii) requires an inverse, which rules out constant maps; if that assumption is intended throughout, the printed part (ii) answer applies.

Functions f:x↦(x2−6x−6)/(x+1) f:x\mapsto(x^2-6x-6)/(x+1), x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≠−1 x\ne-1; g:x↦(ax+1)/(x+b) g:x\mapsto(ax+1)/(x+b), x∈Rx\in\mathbb R, x≠−bx\ne-b, where a,ba, b are constants.

(i) Sketch y=f(x) y=f(x), giving coordinates of turning points and equations of asymptotes. Write down the range of ff. [3]

(ii) Find the value of aa and range of bb such that both fgfg and gfgf exist. [4]

(iii) Find g−1(x) g^{-1}(x). Given g−1(x)=g(x) g^{-1}(x)=g(x) for all real xx, x≠−bx\ne-b, find bb in terms of aa. [3]

Printed working

(i) f(x)=x−7+1/(x+1) f(x)=x-7+1/(x+1). Native source graph has turning points (0,−6)(0, -6) and (−2,−10)(-2, -10), vertical asymptote x=−1 x=-1, oblique y=x−7 y=x-7. Range (−∞,−10]∪[−6,∞)(-\infty, -10]\cup[-6, \infty).

(ii) Printed nonconstant argument:

g(x)=ax+1x+b=a+1−abx+b.g(x)=\frac{ax+1}{x+b}=a+\frac{1-ab}{x+b}.

Rg=R∖{a} R_g=\mathbb R\setminus\{a\}, Df=R∖{−1} D_f=\mathbb R\setminus\{-1\}. For fgfg to exist, Rg⊆DfR_g\subseteq D_f, i. e.R∖{a}⊆R∖{−1}\mathbb R\setminus\{a\}\subseteq\mathbb R\setminus\{-1\}, hence a=−1 a=-1.

Rf=(−∞,−10]∪[−6,∞) R_f=(-\infty, -10]\cup[-6, \infty), Dg=R∖{−b} D_g=\mathbb R\setminus\{-b\}. For gfgf to exist, Rf⊆DgR_f\subseteq D_g ⇒−10<−b<−6-10<-b<-6 ⇒6<b<106<b<10.

Constant-family qualification

The displayed range R∖{a}\mathbb R\setminus\{a\} requires 1−ab≠01-ab\ne0. Literal (ii) also permits ab=1 ab=1: then g(x)=a=1/bg(x)=a=1/b on its punctured domain, Rg={1/b} R_g=\{1/b\}. Both composites exist for 6<b<106<b<10, since 1/b≠−11/b\ne-1 and −b-b is outside RfR_f. Part (iii) requires an inverse and therefore excludes constant gg. If that premise applies throughout, the printed nonconstant answer a=−1 a=-1 is the intended answer.

(iii) Let y=(ax+1)/(x+b) y=(ax+1)/(x+b) ⇒xy+by=ax+1 xy+by=ax+1 ⇒x=(1−by)/(y−a) x=(1-by)/(y-a) ⇒g−1(x)=(1−bx)/(x−a) g^{-1}(x)=(1-bx)/(x-a), x≠ax\ne a, provided 1−ab≠01-ab\ne0.

Given g−1=gg^{-1}=g, (1−bx)/(x−a)=(ax+1)/(x+b)(1-bx)/(x-a)=(ax+1)/(x+b). By comparison, b=−ab=-a. With b=−ab=-a the determinant is nonzero(1+a2>01+a^2>0), so the inverse exists and domains agree.

The short key sketch labels oblique line“y=xy=x”, whereas the detailed working labels y=x−7 y=x-7; the latter is consistent with f(x)=x−7+1/(x+1) f(x)=x-7+1/(x+1). Both printed labels are recorded, and native correct curve uses y=x−7 y=x-7.

Teacher notes

No separate teacher sidebar is printed. The rational graph for gg illustrates nonconstant case with asymptotes x=−bx=-b, y=ay=a; the constant case has a removable hole at x=−bx=-b instead of a vertical asymptote.

Answer key

(i) (−∞,−10]∪[−6,∞)(-\infty, -10]\cup[-6, \infty), turning points and asymptotes in the native figure. Shortkey oblique label“y=xy=x” is corrected separately above. (ii) Printed a=−1 a=-1, 6<b<106<b<10, constant-family qualification above. (iii) b=−ab=-a.

Native diagrams

Source rational f, turning points(0, −6), (−2, −10), x=−1 and y=x−7. Source nonconstant g, asymptotes x=−b and y=a; domain-hole alternative qualified in text.
