Printed question

(a) x=2t2x=2t^2, y=sin⁡(−t)y=\sin(-t), t≥0t\ge0. Find the exact area bounded by curve, xx-axis and x=π2/8x=\pi^2/8. [5]

(b) C: y=x2sec⁡xtan⁡2xy=x^2\sec x\tan^2x, −π/2<x<π/2-\pi/2<x<\pi/2. R is bounded by C and y=23π2y=\frac23\pi^2. Find its volume rotating 2π2\pi about xx-axis to 2 decimal places. [4]

Printed working

(a)

x=2t2x=2t^2, dx/dt=4tdx/dt=4t. x=0⇒t=0x=0\Rightarrow t=0; x=π2/8⇒t=π/4x=\pi^2/8\Rightarrow t=\pi/4 since t≥0t\ge0.

Area=−∫0π2/8ydx=−∫0π/4sin⁡(−t)(4t)dt=4∫0π/4tsin⁡tdt=4[−tcos⁡t]0π/4−4∫0π/4(−cos⁡t)dt=4(−2π/8)+4[sin⁡t]0π/4=22−π2/2units2.\begin{aligned}\text{Area}&=-\int_0^{\pi^2/8}y dx=-\int_0^{\pi/4}\sin(-t)(4t)dt=4\int_0^{\pi/4}t\sin t dt\\&=4[-t\cos t]_0^{\pi/4}-4\int_0^{\pi/4}(-\cos t)dt\\&=4(-\sqrt2\pi/8)+4[\sin t]_0^{\pi/4}=2\sqrt2-\pi\sqrt2/2\quad\text{units}^2.\end{aligned}

(b)

When y=23π2y=\frac23\pi^2, x=±π/3x=\pm\pi/3 or ±1.0472\pm1.0472.

V=π(2π2/3)2(2π/3)−2∫0π/3π(x2sec⁡xtan⁡2x)2dx=267.73units3 (2 d.p.).V=\pi(2\pi^2/3)^2(2\pi/3)-2\int_0^{\pi/3}\pi(x^2\sec x\tan^2x)^2dx=267.73\quad\text{units}^3\ (2\text{ d.p.}).

Teacher notes

The graph shades area below the xx-axis in (a). In (b), subtract the blue even curved solid from the red cylinder: cylinder radius 2π2/32\pi^2/3, length 2π/32\pi/3. Graph labels y=f(x)y=f(x), R,O,±π/2\pm\pi/2 asymptotes,±π/3\pm\pi/3 boundaries, y=2π2/3y=2\pi^2/3 and rotation arrows.

Printed answer key

(a) 22−π2/22\sqrt2-\pi\sqrt2/2 units2^2; (b) 267.73267.73 units3^3 (2 d.p.).
