Notation qualification in (a)(iii): q is defined in the question as a finite-n integral, while R extends to infinity. The printed “2q” is recorded separately from the total area 2ln2. Question PDF p.6 (printed 56), solution p.18.

Printed question

(a) C: y=e−x/(1+e−x)y=e^{-x}/(1+e^{-x}). R is bounded by C, positive xx-axis and positive yy-axis as shown; graph labels y=1,y=0,1/2,R,Oy=1,y=0,1/2,R,O. (i) Obtain a formula in terms of nn for ∫0ne−x1+e−xdx\int_0^n\frac{e^{-x}}{1+e^{-x}}dx, n>0n>0. [2] (ii) Hence find R’s exact area. [2] (iii) Denoting the answer obtained in part (i) by qq, write down in terms of qq the area of R if C is scaled by factor 2 parallel to yy-axis. [1]

(b) A girl designs a bowl by rotating section AB of y=ln⁡xy=\ln x completely about yy-axis. It must hold 300 cm3300\text{ cm}^3. A is (a,ln⁡a)(a,\ln a); the rim diameter is twice the base diameter. State B in terms of aa and find exact aa. [5]

Teacher notes

∫f′/f=ln⁡∣f∣+c\int f'/f=\ln|f|+c, with the modulus sign. ∣f(x)∣=f(x)|f(x)|=f(x) when f(x)>0f(x)>0. A scale factor 2 parallel to yy-axis means replace yy by y/2y/2.

Mathematical review

The question defines qq as the finite-nn answer in (i), but the printed 2q2q for the entire region uses q=ln⁡2q=\ln2 from (ii). Correctly, finite-nn area doubles to 2q(n)2q(n), while the full region’s doubled area is 2ln⁡22\ln2. This reference inconsistency is qualified without rewriting the printed question.
