Question

A complex number is given by z=a+(a−3)iz=a+(a-3)i, where aa is a positive real constant. It is given that arg⁡z=θ\arg z=\theta, where −π/2<θ<0-\pi/2<\theta<0. Find, leaving answers in terms of θ\theta:

(i) arg⁡(−2z)\arg(-2z) [2];

(ii) arg⁡(z−2a)\arg(z-2a) [2].

Source working

Printed working

(i) arg⁡(−2z1)=π+θ\arg(-2z_1)=\pi+\theta.

(ii)

z1−2a=a+(a−3)i−2a=−a+(a−3)iarg⁡(z1−2a)=arg⁡[−a+(a−3)i]=−π+∣θ∣=−π+(−θ)=−π−θ.\begin{aligned}z_1-2a&=a+(a-3)i-2a=-a+(a-3)i\\\arg(z_1-2a)&=\arg[-a+(a-3)i]\\&=-\pi+|\theta|=-\pi+(-\theta)=-\pi-\theta.\end{aligned}

Source notation

The working uses z1z_1 for the question’s zz; it is the same complex number. First diagram labels z1=(a,a−3)z_1=(a,a-3), −2z1-2z_1, aa, a−3a-3, −2a-2a, −2(a−3)-2(a-3), Re, Im, O, θ\theta and π+θ\pi+\theta. Second diagram reflects z1z_1 horizontally to z1−2a=(−a,a−3)z_1-2a=(-a,a-3), with labels −a,a,a−3,∣θ∣,−π,θ-a,a,a-3,|\theta|,-\pi,\theta.

Printed answer key

(i) π+θ\pi+\theta; (ii) −π−θ-\pi-\theta.

Native diagrams

Multiplication by −2 reverses and doubles the vector Subtracting 2a reflects the real component
