Question

w=−1−i3w=-1-i\sqrt3 and z∗+z≠0z^*+z\ne0. P and Q represent ww and z∗+zz^*+z respectively. Find arg⁡w\arg w exactly. Hence state possible values of ∠POQ\angle POQ, where O is the origin. [3]

Source working

Printed working

tan⁡−1(3/1)=π/3,arg⁡w=−π+π/3=−2π/3.\tan^{-1}(\sqrt3/1)=\pi/3,\qquad\arg w=-\pi+\pi/3=-2\pi/3.

Since z∗+z∈Rz^*+z\in\mathbb R, Q lies on the real axis. Thus ∠POQ=π/3\angle POQ=\pi/3 or 2π/32\pi/3; in degrees, 60∘60^\circ or 120∘120^\circ.

Teacher notes

P representing w is in the third quadrant. Let z=x+iyz=x+iy, x,y∈Rx,y\in\mathbb R:

z+z∗=(x+iy)+(x−iy)=2x∈R.z+z^*=(x+iy)+(x-iy)=2x\in\mathbb R.

Printed answer key

arg⁡w=−2π/3\arg w=-2\pi/3; ∠POQ=π/3\angle POQ=\pi/3 or 2π/32\pi/3.
