Fit an elliptical tunnel from boundary points
The diagram below shows the cross-section of a single track tunnel entrance for steam-engine in a model train system. The elliptical entrance of the tunnel can be modelled by the equation .
The highest point of the tunnel entrance is 7 cm directly above the origin at ground level. The track, mounted on track bed , is centred about the origin. A train carrying containers which measured 2 cm wide may stack goods as high as 6.8 cm.
Solve for the constants , to 4 decimal places. Hence find the length of the widest part of the tunnel, to the nearest 0.1 cm. marks

Solution
Fitting a conic
The elliptical entrance of a tunnel is modelled by . The highest point is 7 cm directly above the origin. The track bed has edges at . A train carrying a container 2 cm wide, stacked to 6.8 cm, must just fit, so the point is on the ellipse. Solve for , , to 4 d.p.
Hint
Each of three boundary points gives one equation.
has : it gives immediately.
The other two points give equations in and .
At the equation becomes : the term disappears.
Keep full precision until the end; the widest length is sensitive to .
Answer · ABC
(4 d.p.).
The point
With the and terms vanish.
The point
A centred 2 cm wide load extends 1 cm to either side of the origin, so its top corner is in centimetres. The source teacher note’s metre units are typos. Here , and .
The point
at the highest point, .
Solve
Two equations in . For example eliminate : multiply the first by 7 and the second by 6.8.

Completing the square
Hence find the length of the widest part of the tunnel, to the nearest 0.1 cm.
Hint
Complete the square in to get the standard form .
The widest part is on the line of symmetry , where .
The tunnel is widest at cm, not at the ground (), where it is only 4.3 cm.
gives a full width of cm, not cm.
Answer · Width
6.4 cm (nearest 0.1 cm).
Question dimensions are cm; the margin note’s m units are typos.
Complete the square in
, so and the right-hand side is .
Widest part
On the line of symmetry the -term vanishes.
Length
Widest length is twice the half-width.
