Keep both sides of a terminal velocity when separating

[Motion of Particles with Resistance]

Modified from Fundamentals of Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems, sixth edition, p110. An object starts with velocity v0 and falls under gravity g=9.81g=9.81 metres per second squared. Air resistance gives deceleration proportional to velocity. Given dv/dt=g−kvdv/dt=g-kv, k>0k>0, express v in terms of t.

Reduce a differential equation with a substitution

Show that y=ux2y=ux^2 reduces x2dydx−2xy+y2=0x^2\dfrac{dy}{dx}-2xy+y^2=0, where x>0x>0, to dudx+u2=0\dfrac{du}{dx}+u^2=0. Hence show that the general solution may be expressed as y=x2/(C+x)y=x^2/(C+x), with arbitrary constant CC.

Recognise an exact product derivative

The variables satisfy xeydydx+ey=2xxe^y\dfrac{dy}{dx}+e^y=2x.

(i) Use z=xeyz=xe^y to obtain an equation relating zz and xx.

(ii) Hence, or otherwise, show that the general solution is y=ln⁡(x+k/x)y=\ln(x+k/x), where kk is arbitrary.
