Compare a cubic approximation with the actual function

Let f(x)=exsin⁡xf(x)=e^x\sin x.

(i) Sketch ff for −3≤x≤3-3\le x\le3. [2]

(ii) Expand ff through x3x^3 and call that polynomial g(x)g(x). [3]

(iii) On the same diagram sketch and clearly label gg. [1]

(iv) For −3≤x≤3-3\le x\le3, find where g(x)g(x) is within ±0.5\pm0.5 of f(x)f(x). [3]

Use the printed half-unit initial value in a derivative recurrence

Given f′(x)=f(x)ln⁡(sec⁡(ax))f^{\prime}(x)=f(x)\ln(\sec(ax)) and f(0)=1/2f(0)=1/2, where aa is real and nonzero, show

f′′(x)f(x)=[f′(x)]2+a[f(x)]2tan⁡(ax).f^{\prime\prime}(x)f(x)=[f^{\prime}(x)]^2+a[f(x)]^2\tan(ax).

Hence find the Maclaurin series through x3x^3 in terms of aa. [4]

Estimate an exponential and expand a shifted secant

(a) Let f(x)=etan⁡−1(x/2)f(x)=e^{\tan^{-1}(x/2)}.

(i) Show (4+x2)f′(x)=2f(x)(4+x^2)f^{\prime}(x)=2f(x). [1]

(ii) Use repeated differentiation to expand ff through x2x^2. Use it to estimate eπ/6e^{\pi/6} and show the error is about 3.3%3.3\%. [6]

(b) For g(x)=1/[2cos⁡(x/a+π/4)]g(x)=1/[\sqrt2\cos(x/a+\pi/4)], where a>1a>1, show that for sufficiently small xx, g(x)≈1+px+qx2g(x)\approx1+px+qx^2, finding p,qp,q in terms of aa. [4]
