Printed question

Botanists are studying how excessive logging is affecting the population of forest trees in a country in South-East Asia. The population of trees in a forest after tt years is denoted by xx, in thousands. One simple model proposed is that the population increases at a rate proportional to its population size. It is known that trees are chopped off at a constant rate of 3 thousand trees per year and the population stays constant when x=px=p.

(i) Find a differential equation involving x,tx,t. [3]

(ii) The initial population of trees in a forest is 5 thousand trees. Solve the differential equation in part (i) and show that x=(5−p)e3t/p+px=(5-p)e^{3t/p}+p. [5]

(iii) Given that the population of tree decreases in a finite time, state an inequality satisfied by pp. Sketch the graph of xx against tt for this case, showing clearly the coordinates of the graph’s point of intersection with the horizontal axis. Hence explain the meaning of this axial intercept in the context of the question. [4]

x′=kx−3x'=kx-3. Since population remains constant when x=px=p, 0=kp−3⇒k=3/p0=kp-3\Rightarrow k=3/p; x′=3x/p−3x'=3x/p-3.

x′=(3x−3p)/p=(3/p)(x−p)x'=(3x-3p)/p=(3/p)(x-p). ∫dx/(x−p)=∫(3/p)dt\int dx/(x-p)=\int(3/p)dt.

ln⁡∣x−p∣=3t/p+c\ln|x-p|=3t/p+c; ∣x−p∣=e3t/p+c|x-p|=e^{3t/p+c}; x−p=Ae3t/px-p=Ae^{3t/p}, A=±ecA=\pm e^c; x=Ae3t/p+px=Ae^{3t/p}+p.

At 0, x=5x=5: 5=Ae0+p⇒A=5−p5=Ae^0+p\Rightarrow A=5-p; x=(5−p)e3t/p+px=(5-p)e^{3t/p}+p.

Population decreases, so 5−p<0⇒p>55-p<0\Rightarrow p>5.

At x=0x=0, 0=(5−p)e3t/p+p0=(5-p)e^{3t/p}+p; e3t/p=−p/(5−p)=p/(p−5)e^{3t/p}=-p/(5-p)=p/(p-5); t=(p/3)ln⁡[p/(p−5)]t=(p/3)\ln[p/(p-5)].

The sketch starts at (0,5)(0,5) and meets the horizontal axis at ((p/3)ln⁡[p/(p−5)],0)((p/3)\ln[p/(p-5)],0). Starting from initial year t=0t=0, this is the time needed for the tree population to be fully depleted.

Printed answer key

(i) dx/dt=3x/p−3dx/dt=3x/p-3. (ii) x=Ae3t/p+px=Ae^{3t/p}+p. (iii) p>5p>5; native sketch below.

Teacher note 1

dx/dt=rate of increase−rate of decreasedx/dt=\text{rate of increase}-\text{rate of decrease}. Population remains constant when x=px=p, so dx/dt=0dx/dt=0 when x=px=p.

Teacher note 2

Given dx/dt=kf(x)dx/dt=kf(x), kk constant, rearrange: (1/f(x))dx/dt=k(1/f(x))dx/dt=k, ∫dx/f(x)=∫kdt\int dx/f(x)=\int kdt.

Need to put in the modulus sign when integration results in a logarithm, since its argument may be negative. In removing the modulus sign, remember to put in “±\pm”. Here x−px-p may be negative. xx is in thousands; initial population 5 thousand means x=5x=5 at t=0t=0.

Teacher note 3

Population decreases over time: as tt increases, xx decreases. Since x=(5−p)e3t/p+px=(5-p)e^{3t/p}+p and e3t/p>0e^{3t/p}>0 increases with t≥0t\ge0, 5−p<05-p<0. Time cannot be negative, so t≥0t\ge0; no sketch for t<0t<0.

The source curve applies for every p>5p>5; this viewing example uses p=8p=8. The symbolic extinction-time label is retained.

Mathematical review

(i) x′=kx−3x'=kx-3 with k>0. Equilibrium at p gives k=3/p, with p>0.

(ii) Separate x′=3(x−p)/px'=3(x-p)/p to obtain x=p+Ae3t/px=p+Ae^{3t/p}. The initial value gives A=5−p, as required.

(iii) Decrease from 5 requires 5−p<0, so p>5. The curve starts at (0,5), decreases with negative second derivative, and reaches x=0 at t∗=(p/3)ln⁡[p/(p−5)]t_*=(p/3)\ln[p/(p-5)]. This means all modeled trees are gone. Restrict the contextual solution to 0≤t≤t∗0\le t\le t_*: the negative continuation is not a population. If p=5, the population stays constant; p<5 predicts growth.
