Question

zz has modulus rr and argument θ\theta, with 0<r<10<r<1 and π/2<θ<π\pi/2<\theta<\pi. ww satisfies ∣w∣=∣z∣|w|=|z| and arg⁡w+arg⁡z=π\arg w+\arg z=\pi.

A, B, C, D and E represent z,w,z−w,z∗,−izz,w,z-w,z^*,-iz respectively, where z∗z^* is the conjugate of zz. On a single Argand diagram illustrate all five points. [5]

Printed working and teacher notes

arg⁡z=θ\arg z=\theta, arg⁡w=π−θ\arg w=\pi-\theta; OA and OB are equally inclined to the real axis.

z−wz-w is represented by BA→\overrightarrow{BA} or OC→\overrightarrow{OC}, where OC→=BA→\overrightarrow{OC}=\overrightarrow{BA}. Since ∣OA→∣=∣OB→∣|\overrightarrow{OA}|=|\overrightarrow{OB}|, BA is parallel to the real axis. C therefore lies on the real axis.

E is A rotated clockwise through 90∘90^\circ about the origin.

All diagram labels

Re, Im, O, A, B, C, D, E; radius rr on OA, OB, OD and OE; angles θ\theta, π−θ\pi-\theta, −θ-\theta; right angle between OA and OE; C=(2rcos⁡θ,0)C=(2r\cos\theta,0).

Native coordinates clarify the diagram without changing its content:

A=(rcos⁡θ,rsin⁡θ),B=(−rcos⁡θ,rsin⁡θ),A=(r\cos\theta,r\sin\theta),\quad B=(-r\cos\theta,r\sin\theta), C=(2rcos⁡θ,0),D=(rcos⁡θ,−rsin⁡θ),E=(rsin⁡θ,−rcos⁡θ).C=(2r\cos\theta,0),\quad D=(r\cos\theta,-r\sin\theta),\quad E=(r\sin\theta,-r\cos\theta).
