Solution

(i)

Distance from a line

State the shortest distance from BB to the line through OO and AA.

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. ∣b×a∣∣a∣\frac{|\mathbf b\times\mathbf a|}{|\mathbf a|}.

Answer · (i)

∣b×a∣/∣a∣|b\times a|/|a|.

(ii)

Area identity

With c=a+b\mathbf c=\mathbf a+\mathbf b, state the geometrical meaning of ∣b×c∣|\mathbf b\times\mathbf c| and show it equals ∣a×b∣|\mathbf a\times\mathbf b|.

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. ∣b×c∣|\mathbf b\times\mathbf c| is the area of the parallelogram with sides OBOB and OCOC.

  2. Expand using b×b=0\mathbf b\times\mathbf b=\mathbf 0.

Answer · (ii)

Area of the parallelogram with sides OB,OCOB,OC; b×c=−a×bb\times c=-a\times b, hence equal magnitudes.

(iii)

Degenerate cross product

Given a×2b=d×3a\mathbf a\times2\mathbf b=\mathbf d\times3\mathbf a, find a linear relationship between a\mathbf a, b\mathbf b, d\mathbf d.

Hint

  1. Move everything to one side and factor out a×\mathbf a\times.

  2. a×w=0\mathbf a\times\mathbf w=\mathbf 0 means a∥w\mathbf a\parallel\mathbf w.
