Self-inverse functions

f(x)=ax+bcx−2f(x)=\dfrac{ax+b}{cx-2} for x≠2cx\ne\frac2c. By finding f−1(x)f^{-1}(x), show that a=2a=2 for ff to be self-inverse.

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. Write y=ax+bcx−2y=\frac{ax+b}{cx-2} and make xx the subject.

  2. Compare f−1f^{-1} with ff.

Answer · (i)

f−1(x)=(2x+b)/(cx−a)f^{-1}(x)=(2x+b)/(cx-a); self-inverse requires a=2a=2.

Inverse requires 2a+bc≠0; its input excludes a/c.

Explore the idea

A self-inverse graph is its own mirror image

With a = 2, b = 3, c = 5 the curve and its inverse lie on top of each other. One branch is shown (x > 2/5).

Reflection swaps the coordinates. The segment PQ is perpendicular to y = x, and its blue midpoint M lies on that line.

Key idea

A self-inverse graph is symmetric about y=xy=x: the reflection of any point on it is also on it.

Ideas to try
Move xx and compare the coordinates of PP and QQ: are they on the same curve?
(ii)

Powers of a function

Now a=2a=2, b=3b=3, c=5c=5. Find f2(x)f^2(x).

Hint

  1. f=f−1f=f^{-1}, so f2=ff−1f^2=ff^{-1}.

Answer · (ii)

f2(x)=xf^2(x)=x, x≠2/5x\ne2/5.

(iii)

Reducing large powers

Evaluate f71(4)f^{71}(4).

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. f2f^2 is the identity, so only the parity of the power matters.

  2. 71=2×35+171=2\times35+1.

Answer · (iii)

f71(4)=11/18f^{71}(4)=11/18.

Explore the idea

Apply f to 4, again and again

The value alternates between 4 and 11/18, because f applied twice returns the input.

Existence of composites

g(x)=2x2−3g(x)=2x^2-3 for all real xx. Explain why fgfg does not exist.

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. fgfg exists when Rg⊆DfR_g\subseteq D_f.

  2. Find the one value excluded from DfD_f and check whether gg reaches it.

Answer · (iv)

fgfg does not exist: 2/5∈Rg=[−3,∞)2/5\in R_g=[-3,\infty) but 2/5∉Df2/5\notin D_f.

Explore the idea

Does g ever output 2/5?

The input y = k to f is bad when k = 2/5. The parabola reaches that height at two places.

Height of the horizontal linek = 0.4

Number of distinct intersections
2

Two intersections. In particular, gg reaches 2/52/5, an excluded input of ff.

All listed intersections are within the original drawing window. A touching point counts once; hollow endpoints are excluded.

Coordinates are rounded to 6 significant figures. Inspect a row to highlight that intersection and bring it into view.

Key idea

Because gg can output 25\frac25, feeding it to ff would divide by zero.

Ideas to try
Set k=25k=\frac25 and read off the two inputs that make g=25g=\frac25.

Solving rational equations

Find the exact solutions of gf(x)=5gf(x)=5.

Hint

  1. gf(x)=2f(x)2−3gf(x)=2f(x)^2-3.

  2. Solve f(x)2=4f(x)^2=4, so f(x)=±2f(x)=\pm2.

Answer · (v)

x=7/8x=7/8 or x=1/12x=1/12.
