Solution

(i)

Optimisation: vertical gap

C:y=x2C:y=x^2 and L:y=12x−2L:y=\frac12x-2. AA on CC and BB on LL have the same xx-coordinate. Find AA and BB that give the shortest distance ABAB.

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. For the same xx, AB=x2−(x2−2)AB=x^2-\left(\frac x2-2\right).

  2. Minimise this function of xx.

Answer · (i)

A=(1/4,1/16)A=(1/4,1/16); B=(1/4,−15/8)B=(1/4,-15/8).

Minimum AB=31/16.

The vertical gap AB against x

The gap is smallest where its gradient is zero: x = 1/4.

For x<1/4 the vertical gap shrinks as x increases.

  • Vertical gap AB
  • Tangent
  • Gradient, and where the gap grows
  • Join P to Q; the dashed legs show Δx and Δy
Key idea

The gap is a quadratic in xx; its vertex is at x=14x=\frac14.

Ideas to try
Find the xx with the smallest gap.
(ii)

Optimisation: horizontal gap

PP on CC and QQ on LL have the same yy-coordinate. Find PP and QQ that give the shortest distance PQPQ.

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. Write xx in terms of yy for each: PP has x=yx=\sqrt y (the nearer branch) and QQ has x=2(y+2)x=2(y+2).

  2. Minimise PQ=2(y+2)−yPQ=2(y+2)-\sqrt y.

Answer · (ii)

P=(1/4,1/16)P=(1/4,1/16); Q=(33/8,1/16)Q=(33/8,1/16).

Minimum PQ=31/8.

The horizontal gap PQ against y

As y increases from 0 the gap first shrinks, then grows. Its gradient is zero at y = 1/16.

For y>1/16 the horizontal gap grows.

Selected values are within the original drawing windows.

  • Horizontal gap PQ
  • Tangent
  • Gradient, and where the gap grows
  • Join P to Q; the dashed legs show Δx and Δy
Key idea

The horizontal and vertical gaps are different functions, and here both are smallest at the same point (14,116)\left(\frac14,\frac1{16}\right) on CC.

Ideas to try
Is the minimum at the same yy for both gaps?

Area of a polygon

Find the exact area of the polygon formed by joining the points found in (i) and (ii).

Explore this idea

Hint

  1. AA and PP are the same point, so the polygon is the triangle PBQPBQ.

  2. The base ABAB is vertical and the base PQPQ is horizontal, so the angle at AA is a right angle.

Answer · (iii)

Area =961/256=961/256 square units.

Related rates with an integral

A point (s,s2)(s,s^2) starts at OO and moves along CC with ss increasing at 2 units/s. Find the rate of change of the area bounded by the curve, the yy-axis and the line y=s2y=s^2 when s=2s=\sqrt2.

Hint

  1. The area is ∫0s2y dy\int_0^{s^2}\sqrt y\,dy.

  2. Differentiate with respect to ss, then multiply by dsdt=2\frac{ds}{dt}=2.

Answer · (iv)

8 square units/s.
