Derive an ellipse tangent without losing its vertical cases

The curve CC has x=2cos⁡tx=2\cos t, y=sin⁡ty=\sin t, 0≤t<2π0\le t<2\pi.

(i) Find its cartesian equation. [2]

(ii) Sketch CC. [2]

(iii) Show that the tangent at the point with parameter tt is (cos⁡t)x+(2sin⁡t)y=2(\cos t)x+(2\sin t)y=2. [3]

(iv) Hence find the tangents at PP, where t=7π/6t=7\pi/6, and QQ, where t=11π/6t=11\pi/6. [2]

Use a horizontal normal to identify a vertical tangent

The curve CC has x=kcos⁡tx=k\cos t, y=ksin⁡2ty=k\sin2t, −π/4≤t<π/4-\pi/4\le t<\pi/4, where k>0k>0.

(i) Find the normal at (kcos⁡p,ksin⁡2p)(k\cos p,k\sin2p), where −π/4<p<π/4-\pi/4<p<\pi/4. [3]

(ii) Deduce the tangent at t=0t=0. [2]

Obtain a tangent-intercept triangle and qualify its endpoint

A curve has x=cos⁡2tx=\cos^2t, y=sin⁡3ty=\sin^3t, 0≤t≤π/20\le t\le\pi/2.

(i) Sketch the curve. [2]

(ii) The tangent at (cos⁡2θ,sin⁡3θ)(\cos^2\theta,\sin^3\theta) meets the x- and y-axes at QQ and RR respectively. With OO the origin, show that the area of triangle OQROQR is 112sin⁡θ(3cos⁡2θ+2sin⁡2θ)2\tfrac1{12}\sin\theta(3\cos^2\theta+2\sin^2\theta)^2. The source repeats the interval using tt; the tangent parameter is θ\theta. [6]

Remove the original intersection before using a discriminant

A curve is given by x=at2x=at^2, y=2aty=2at.

Show that the normal at (at2,2at)(at^2,2at) is y+tx=at3+2aty+tx=at^3+2at.

If that normal meets the curve again at (aq2,2aq)(aq^2,2aq), show that t2+qt+2=0t^2+qt+2=0. Deduce that q2q^2 cannot be less than 88.
