Reconstruct a decreasing function with an isolated zero gradient

The diagram shows y=f′(x)y=f^{\prime}(x) meeting the x-axis at x=−3x=-3 and x=1x=1. Given f(−3)=4f(-3)=4 and f(1)=1f(1)=1:

(i) State the coordinates and natures of the stationary points of y=f(x)y=f(x). [3]

(ii) Find the range of xx for which the curve is strictly decreasing. [2]

(iii) Sketch y=f(x)y=f(x). [2]

Given derivative is negative before −3, touches zero at −3 as a local maximum, falls to an unlabelled negative minimum, then rises and crosses the axis at 1. It is positive after 1.

Determine a rational curve and sketch its derivative exactly

The curve CC is y=f(x)=ax2+bx+cy=f(x)=\dfrac{ax^2+b}{x+c}, where a,b,ca,b,c are constants, and y=−x+2y=-x+2 is an asymptote.

(i) Show that a=−1a=-1, c=2c=2. [2]

(ii) Given b=1b=1, sketch CC, showing all asymptotes, stationary points and axial intercepts, if any. [4]

(iii) Sketch y=f′(x)y=f^{\prime}(x), showing all asymptotes, axial intercepts and stationary points, if any. [3]

Convert units before differentiating a conical pile

Sand from a chute forms a conical pile whose altitude is always 4/34/3 of its base radius.

(i) How fast is its volume increasing when the radius is 11 m and increases at 1/8 cm s−11/8\text{ cm s}^{-1}? [4]

(ii) How fast is its radius increasing when it is 22 m and the volume increases at 1000 cm3 s−11000\text{ cm}^3\text{ s}^{-1}? [3]

Optimise and differentiate a triangle on an implicit curve

Point Q(x,y)Q(x,y) lies on 4x2+xy+y2=364x^2+xy+y^2=36, with y≥0y\ge0. The curve meets the x-axis at P,RP,R as drawn.

(i) Show that triangle PQRPQR has area A=3yA=3y. [3]

(ii) Find dy/dxdy/dx in terms of x,yx,y. [2]

(iii) Hence find the x-value where AA is stationary and use the second derivative test to determine its nature. [6]

If xx increases at 88 units/s, find the rate of change of AA when x=0x=0. [3]

Optimise a flower-bed under a wall-building time budget

A flower-bed for a large garden consists of an xx m by yy m rectangle topped by a semicircle of diameter xx m. A low wall takes 33 hours per metre along the straight parts and 99 hours per metre around the semicircular arc. A total of 180180 hours is available.

Use differentiation to find x,yx,y giving maximum area. [10]
